For the last few days we seem to be having problems sending email to hotmail
accounts. This is a problem since some of our salesmen insist on using
hotmail.

I send the email, and do not get an NDR of any kind.
If I ask for receive and read receipts I get the receive, but never see the
email in my hotmail inbox to reply to the read receipt..

I have our domain in the safe list, and the emails do not appear in junk
mail folder or deleted items folder.

I then used telnet to manually send an email from our domain, got no error
messages. It concluded by stating that it had queued mail for delivery, but
I never see the email.

Any suggestions would really be appreciated, as I am out of ideas.

Read my post a few down from yours, Outgoing queues mail won't leave. One
of the domains we have trouble sending to is Hotmail. I will bet if you
check your queue for Hotmail you will see all of your "missing" mail there.
Rebooting your mail server will cause all of the legitimate queued mail to
be delivered, but is only a temporary fix as the problem will re-occur.
If you learn the root cause for this problem, please reply to my post. This
bug is a nusiance.
Thanks.

thats the funny thing, I look at my outgoing queues and I do not see a
hotmail queue. I only have a couple of outgoing queues shown and they have
1 or 2 emails in each, but no hotmail.
weird.

I too am experiencing the same issue with outbound messages to @hotmail.com
accounts. My Queues are free and clear but messages are not being received.

It was working fine a couple days ago I know for sure and have made no
changes what so ever since then.

Sorry no solution here yet but just wanted to add my experiences as well.

Sounds like we are experiencing the same thing.
I sent email to my hotmail account, and my comcast account, and asked for
read and delivery receipts for both. The reply I get back from Comcast says
it was delivered, the reply from hotmail was :

Reporting-MTA: dns;mail.mydomain.com
Final-Recipient: rfc822;myaccount@hotmail.com
Action: relayed
Status: 2.5.0
X-Display-Name: 'Gary M'

Like with you, this started several days ago for us.

If I ever find anything out I will post it here.

Its good to know that I'm not the only one having this problem.
Could it have anything to do with the mydoom worm?
I heard it was going to target microsoft servers, maybe its got hotmail
slowed down.

Hi all, we also are experiencing the same exact thing, no
ndr's, just a long delay of messages being sent or
recieved, could it be cause of the recent virus attacks?

A little twist on the problem!
I'm having similar problems with this but let me explain
mine a bit more.... See if you can follow:

This is what I've discovered.
If I email from outlook set up as an exchagne client.. the
message dosn't go through
If I email from hotmail to my exchange, I get a message,
if I reply to this message I get it in hotmail!!
If I then send to hotmail a new message it makes it there!
WIERD

Anyhow same problems you all have been having, just wanted
to let you know what I've discovered... Try it and see
what you find out!!

Then on top of it all
I have another wierd email program, hard to explain, but
users can create emails in there, then it relays through
my exchange server. Well none of these go to hotmail.

I am of the opinion that hotmail is doing something that
we arn't aware of, and making all us admins look like
dummies(would use a stronger word).

I can email anywhere in the country from all email clients
except hotmail!

I just saw the same thing!
I did the same thing you did, sent email from hotmail to exchange, replied
back from exchange and the hotmail account receive it!
I then sent email directly from exchange to hotmail, not replying but a new
email, and I am not receiving it again.

Man, that is just weird. I hate weird.

how is replying to an email different from sending a new message?
Does a reply pass filtering entirely and go straight into the inbox?
Is that why we can reply, but not send email to hotmail?

I can't figure it out whatesoever. I'm having trouble
tracking the messages in exchange though. It seems if I
send from my exchange client I can see the message in my
message tracking, if I send it pop I can't... The pop
messages are the majority not making it.

Anyhow I agree I don't like wierd. The only other thing I
can think of is maybe it has something to do with the
novarg virus. I had a computer in my network that managed
to get infected, and I'm thinking maybe it sent to
hotmail, then hotmail decided somehow to block message
from my domain? It's a long shot but it's the only thing
I can think of. Any of your computers get infected?

no computers infected yet, thank goodness.

Symantec AVF for Exchange has caught quite a few infected emails that were
sent to us. and the spam software we are using checks names against active
directory, keeping all the infected emails with a fake name like
joe@mydomain.com and bob@mydomain.com from coming in, and boy are there a
lot of them.

I cant help but think this is related to the latest worm, since this started
about the time the worm hit.
