|
|
I have a store that has grown too large and cannot get it running long
enough to clean out mailboxes. I have done the reg hack to allow for a 17G
mailbox size and ran an offline defrag and nieither worked. The defrag ran
for twelve hours then failed. Is there a way to get the size of the mailbox
store down so I can get the store running?
Thanks,
Mark

And you're defo on Exchange 2000 or did you just post into here

And if you are only on Exchange 2000 you can use
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange-ISINTEG-ESEUTIL.html to
employ the eseutil /d to shrink the store.
Of course, this will only work if you take a look at Event ID 1221 and
see some "free space" (it'll tell you how much) If you haven't got any
free space then you're stuck until such time as you do some moving to
PST files (feigns coronary) or do some deletion. |

Not sure I understand your first comment. I am on Exch 2000. If I were on
2003 I would add a mailbox store and transfer boxes to it.
As for the eseutil /d command, it ran for 12 hours then failed. I am
looking for a way to pare down the size of this thing so it will at least run.

Apparently the service pack 3 rollout did not take on the server and the
temporary increase function was not working. After applying the rollout
again it bumped the size and I was able to get the system running and cleaned
out.
How long does the eseutil /d function typically run? For an offline defrag
12 hours seemed a bit excessive.
Thanks,
Mark

MS's official answer for the defrag process is eseutil can process
4-5GB per hour.
Personally I've seen faster and slower rates. Frankly it depends on:
a) your disk subsystem
b) how you utilize disk during the defrag process, where you put your
temp defrag file, etc
c) how frag'd your mailstore is. The worse it is, the longer it takes.
As an example, I ran a defrag on the same store twice over 6 months.
The first time the store (edb file) was about 15GB in size. The defrag
took about 3 hours, and shrunk the store to 13GB. This was the first
time the store had been 'maintained' in three years.
The second time I ran the defrag on the same store, about 3 months
later, the defrag took about an hour. I gained about 500MB of space.
There you go.
