Hello,

We have a problem with one of our exchange 5.5. servers
and would like your help with this. I has been working
fine for the last ~2 years buty started to falter at about
25th September.

Current config:
Compaq Proliant 800 server, 640MB RAM, C: and D: drive min
1.3GB free, swap file size 960MB. Windows NT4 SP6a
Exchange 5.5 SP4

We have a WAN setup with 12 Exchange servers in one
Exchange site. Communication between all other centres is
fine, except that our 'Louth' server has MTA queues to all
other servers and all other servers have an MTA queue back
to Louth. The mails in those queues have been in the
queues now for several days.

According to MS KB articles I have checked the following:
- DNS mal-configuration:
We don't use DNS internally, instead we use WINS. I have
checked WINS config which seems fine. When pinging it
resolves names to addresses ok. However running the 'net
view \\otherservername' command it works between other
centres but not to/from Louth.

- Change a 'Concurrent XAPI Sessions' value in the
registry.
However it was already set to the suggested value.

- Check if enough RAM is available.
Task manager reports more than 100MB RAM still available.
However I have increased the swap file size to 1.5 times
the amount of RAM (=960MB).

Exchange services seem to stop and start fine.

Can you offer any assistance?

Hi,

With Exchange 5.5 SP4, Exchange moved to using fully qualified domain names
and DNS instead of WINS. A quick resolution to the issue with 9318 errors
is to simply open the HOST file on the Exchange server that is having the
issues and populate it with the Fully Qualified Domain Name and IP address
of the other Exchange servers in your Org. Once that has been saved, you
can restart the MTA and it should relieve the 9318 and mail back-ups.

Here is some more information:

Best Regards,
Beth
