I'm testing Active Sync on my Windows Mobile 5 cell phone. I got Support
code: 0x80072F06 error. Problem is I installed wildcard SSL on my OWA. My
google search result says that Windows Mobile 5 doesn't support wildcard
SSL. Does Windows Mobile 6 support it? If version 6 is the same as version
5, is there a way to make it work with wildcard SSL?

According to this:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/solutionaccelerators/mobile/maintain/SecModel/bd8cc6b6-0038-4e56-b1d4-b7b9af9ea6ef.mspx?mfr=true
Yes, WM6 supports wildcard certs.

I suspect that wont be the end of your issues with certs, but thats the
answer you were looking for.
WM is very fussy with certs.

Great. Thanks Martin. Now I gotta find someone who has WM6 phone to test it.

You're right. With WM6, I still can't sync Sad

Where can I get a free (commercial) SSL cert for testing purpose?

You might be able to do this.
http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2006/01/28/making_a_root_cert_cab_file.aspx
It did this before with a non standard cert.

Im not WM expert, but one thing I have learned is that if you are not using
tier 1 certs like Verisign or Thwate, you are going to have issues!

One cool thing you might check out is the device emulators.
I personally found trying to figure this stuff out on the acutall device was
a pain.
You can download the emulators and run them on your PC.

I've looked at Thawte site. Thawte (and Verisign) provide free trial SSL
cert. I'll give it a shot.
Thawte pricing isn't as bad as Verisign. If the trial cert works fine, I'll
get Thawte cert.

I'll take a look at the links. Thanks for your help.

Yea. We use Thwate. Definetly better priced!

I'm facing one road block after another.

I've just installed trial cert from Thawte into my owa site. Active Sync now
fails with a different code:

"The security certificate on the server is invalid. Contact your Exchange
server administrator or ISP to install a valid cert on the server.
Support Code: 0x80072F0D"

I also get cert warning when using IE7 to access OWA. It looks like I have
to install root CA on my browser. I can do this easily on IE7 but unsure how
to do it on my WM5 phone.

I don't mean to complicate matters, I have one last question. I'm going to
use ISA2006 to publish OWA. Do you think there will be another road block
for me? At the moment I'm doing the test without ISA box. Incoming port 443
requests gets redirected to my Exchange box (directly).

That new cert sounds messed up or you missed something in the installation.
The fact you are getting errors in IE gives me that idea.
I cant imagine a Twate cert would be not trusted.
You should review the install docs and if needed contact Thwate.

Test cert installation on my default web site was successful. However, I
think there's an extra step needed. Right after submitting my Cert Signing
Request I see the following message (copied from thawte.com):

-------------------------------------------------------
Certificate Contents and Extensions
Your 21-Day Free SSL Trial Certificate has been generated with content
similar to a trusted thawte certificate. It is an X.509 V3 format
certificate.
The CRL Distribution Point (CDP) certificate extension has been embedded in
your Trial Certificate and has a dummy Certificate Revocation List (CRL) for
the Trial certificate system. You can test whether your application or
browser fetches the CRL from http://crl.thawte.com.

Also embedded is the AuthorityInfoAccess certificate extension containing a
URI for Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP). Note that this trial
certificate has not been placed in our OCSP database, so the OCSP query will
fail.

Note: In order to test this feature successfully, you will need to download
and install the Test CA Root Certificate into your browser. It can be
downloaded here.

-------------------------------------------------------

That last statement makes me think Test CA Root is not in my browser by
default.
