Currently using Windows Messenger 5.0 (5.0.0482), Windows XP. Whole
network is on a 10.0.0.x subnet. We've installed the following reghacks:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client]
"CorpPC2Phone"=dword:00000001
"PreventAutoUpdate"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client\{83D4679E-B6D7-11D2-BF36-00C04FB90A03}]
"Disabled"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client\{83D4679F-B6D7-11D2-BF36-00C04FB90A03}]
"Disabled"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client\{9b017612-c9f1-11d2-8d9f-0000f875c541}]
"Disabled"=dword:00000001

For all the laptops, the XP firewall is enabled by default, since people
occasionally use the laptops to connect to the internet from home.
Unfortunately, anybody who has the firewall enabled on their laptop
cannot reliably receive instant messages while connected to the LAN,
whether here or via VPN. They show as being online, but the message
times out as if they were not able to connect. If I disable the XP
firewall, they receive IMs just fine.

I checked Microsoft's KB, and didn't see anything there about which
ports need to be open in order to make the firewall work. Any
suggestions here?

On the client:
Windows Messenger -> Tools -> Options
Click "Accounts" tab
Click "Advanced" button next to "Exchange Account"
Change from "Default" to "Fixed Port(s)" and set the port
range to anything above 1024 (use the same number,
creating a 1-port range).
Open this port inbound in Windows XP Firewall.

This requires Exchange 2000 SP3, and works for all client-
side firewalls exhibiting this problem.
