I have a client that wants me to take a look at some of the mailboxes on the
server. She (the Director) thinks there may be some improper use of email
going on.
In Exchange 2000 / SBS 2000 I remember being able to actually look at
individual mailboxes from the server and open individual emails. I can not
find this facility with SBS 2003 / Exchange 2003. Has it been done away
with, or are there some options that need to be set in the registry or
elsewhere.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hmm, nope, you didn't remember that.
Sure, there are permissions that you can set, either on the target
mailboxes or for everyone (KB 821897) but unless SBS had something
different the behaviour in man-size E2K and E2K3 is no different. |

Then have her spend the $ on software like C2C. You do not want to
grant rights to those who screw up.

Bob,
If you're looking for the 'm:\' drive, it's been disabled by default
in Exchange 2003. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821836 explains how
to turn it back on. Alternatively (and preferably in my opinion!),
you could use Outlook to access any account assuming Exchange
permissions have been adjusted accordingly.

Hmmmm...
Just thinking out loud here... never tried it, but what if you exmerge out a
copy of the mailboxes and imported them into a outlook .pst file for the
admin?
Could get tedious for the person who reviews the contents, but maybe you
could narrow it down to a few suspects?

Yes,
The m: drive. That is what I was trying to remember. Thanks
Obviously some here don't approve; but you would have to know the situation.
I assure you she has ample reason to want to take a look. Has more to do
with company working smoothly than invasion of privacy.
Again thanks

Sounds like it could work. If enabling the m: drive don't do it I will give
it a try.

At a glance, these look like perhaps the easiest way to go. I will give
them a try.
Thanks,

And looking in the M drive or recreating it in 2003 is just about the
most stupid suggestion I ever heard in my life.
Just assign permissions over the mailbox and use Outlook to view
emails.
Outlook is a mail client. Windows Explorer is NOT a mail client. |

Certainly not at you, merely an expression of how frightening the
course of action would be. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I followed them. When I go into Outlook and
tell it to open another users mailbox, it gives options for Inbox and
others, but when Inbox is selected, only the top level and no sub folders
are displayed. How can those subfolders be displayed also.
I did an ExMerge to get the current contents to a .pst file that could be
loaded, but that does nothing for the future without doing it every week or
so.
Thanks,
Bob Showalter
