Hi;

I have Exchange 2000 installed on a dedicated server and am wondering if I
can have IIS 5's SMTP Service installed on a separate machine and use that
as the primary mail server and have Exchange 2000 retrieve and send mail
through that machine - is this possible?

Also, would I have to butcher my existing Exchange 2000 installation to
accomplish this or just adjust it?

Thanks!

Hi,

It is possible to use the IIS SMTP on a windows 200x server as a smart-host
for the exchange server. There is not much configuration needed on the
exchange server. Just create a smtp connector and configure this to use the
smtp server as a smart-host.

Hi Leif;

Thanks for the reply Smile

So would the smart host machine do both sending and receiving from the
Exchange machine or would it just receive mail and the exchange machine
would do the actual sending?

Thanks!

Hi,

Thats is completely up to you.

If you have your MX record point to the SMTP server and configure this
server to forward all inbound to the exchange server it will receive and if
you configure the exchange server to send through a smart-host and configure
the SMTP server to allow the exchange server to relay it would also send.

Hi Lief;

Thank you for your continued advice! Smile

I've got it set up as you described (so that mail is both accepted and sent
through the separate SMTP machine) and I've also ensured that none of the
mail servers are open relays so it's secure Smile

Question:

I was thinking that if I restarted the Exchange server incoming mail from
the Internet would not be lost because the separate SMTP machine is still
running. I tested this by sending mail to myself from the Internet while the
Exchange machine was off-line yet it did not seem to work.

Is there something I need to do to make this possible or does the SMTP
machine just 'toss' mail as soon as it receives some?

Best!
Dave

Hi,

The SMTP server should keep the mail in a queue if the exchange server is
gone for a moment.

Have you searched for your mail in one of the queue folders on the smtp
server?
