My ISP is unable to connect to port 25 in order to delivery smtp email.

I have disable packet filtering in ISA for the purposes of testing.
My ISP has confirmed that they do not block port 25.
I have checked via grc and this port is reported as being stealth.

Is there any other reason that port 25 may not be responding ?

How can I confirm that the Win2K version of IMC is running and ready to
accept connections on port 25 ?

Thanks

Henry

plug a laptop in on the outside of your firewall/ISA server ... try
telneting to port 25 of your box. Is this an Exchange question or are you
just trying to get Windows 2000 SMTP service running?

I have requested my ISP test this for me who has supplied the following
results:
H:\>telnet 61.68.114.159 25
Connecting To 61.68.114.159...Could not open a connection to host on port 25
: Connect failed

(This IP address is dynamic so it will not work if tested now as it will
have probably changed)

I am trying to download mail from my ISP which requires port 25 however port
25 is not responding.

Thanks

Henry

OK so part two to my question was " Is this an Exchange question or are you
just trying to get Windows 2000 SMTP service running?" Answering this for
us will help us continue to help with this.

Do you have a firewall between the server and the
internet?

Check to see that the SMTP server in exchange is started.

Try telneting to port 25 on the local subnet where the
server is located, you should get a banner. You can not
do much so just 'quit' to close the connection.

Another local test is to setup an outlook Outlook Express
account to send mail through the exchange box, you should
be able to send mail to local exchange users.

I have the ISA firewall setup but it is configured to allow port25 for
Exchange SMTP

I can telnet to 25 in the server and receive the banner to which I am
presented with:
220 angus.ourdomain.com.au Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version:
5.0.2195.53
29 ready at Thu, 4 Sep 2003 13:57:14 +1000

On the client computers email can be sent locally from Outlook client to
Outlook client.

Thanks

Henry

Sounds like a firewall problem, get a PC with outlook
express out side the firewall and try to connect or just
get outside the firewall and telnet to port 25 you should
still get the banner as before.
The bottom line though is you need a STATIC or very close
to static IP address so you can have your ISP direct your
domain mail directly to your exchange server. The other
option that works well is the POP3 connector service,
your ISP holds your mail in your domains mail box or
boxes (however you set it up) and exchange collects the
mail from the ISP and distributes it according to your
setup. The one draw back to this setup is if users
subscribe to mailing lists, these do not pass through a
shared POP account very well (there is usually no TO:
information to sort on).

Hi Terry and thanks for the advice, all is greatly appreciated.
My ISP has checked the connection to port 25 on my ip address without
success, the following being the results returned. As the IP Address is
dynamic this is no longer the valid IP.

H:\>telnet 61.68.114.159 25
Connecting To 61.68.114.159...Could not open a connection to host on port 25
: Connect failed

We have always received mail from the ISP this way using SBS 4.5. Our ISP
uses an exe that we run which contacts the ISP and dequeues the mail to our
server. It has only stopped working since upgrading to SBS2000.

I have checked the ISA configuration and port 25 is available with an SMTP
packet filter defined for port 25.

Henry
