Hi,

I am the support person for desktop computers which includes e-mail
clients. I was tasked this afternoon with going to a VIP's office first
thing tomorrow morning to resolve his Outlook 2003 problem as it
connects to an Exchange 2003 server.

We have an Exchange 2003 server with about 60 VIP users. The chief
academic officer has been experiencing a delay of at least ten minutes
from the time he opens Outlook until he can use the application read e-mail.

Our Exchange admins tell me that the Exchange server is running fine, so
it must be client problem.

I know he is up to date on his patches. I do know he has over thirty
thousand messages in is message store. A majority of them are in his inbox.

Any suggestions on what the culprit could be would be greatly
appreciated. I've perused most of the Exchange and Outlook newsgroups,
but nothing has jumped out as a possible culprit.

Thank you for your assistance,

Lewis Noles

Is he running his Outlook in Cached Mode? How big is his mailbox? When
opening Outlook what does is say at the bottom right of his Outlook?
Example, waiting to update folder.

Hi,

1. The client is running Outlook 2003 in Exchange Cached Mode.
2. The total Mailbox is approximately 1.7 GB. The total number of
messages in just his Inbox is approximately 25-27 thousand messages.
I'm sorry a colleague and I went to look at it this morning and he has
the exact numbers in his notes.
3. On first start of Outlook 2003 for the day, this morning it took 3-5
minutes to load Outlook 2003. During the time is said either waiting to
update folders, or updating "one of his folders."
4. This instance of starting Outlook 2003, consumes a significant CPU
Utilization.
4. Any other time after Outlook first starts, if we close Outlook and
restart it, or reboot the machine and start Outlook, Outlook's start
time is under a minute

This client finds the 3-5 minute delay unacceptable. Any suggestion for
resolving this issue will be greatly appreciated.

This morning, I have heard from other users on that Exchange Server
reporting a delay of several minutes when starting Outlook for the first
time.

Thank you for your assistance,
