|
|
Using Exchage 2003, with static IP on DSL behind Linksys router with port 25
forwarded to that machine (Win2003 fully patched withExchange 2003).
I am trying to use the Smart Host to send mail thru either Verio or
Bellsouth.Net.
I use Verio for web hosting and have a mailserver name: xxx.com, username:
uname, and a password: pwd (All names/password are for example only). Verio
uses the "Pop Before SMTP" protocol so they are rejecting my connection with
"The remote SMTP service rejected AUTH negotiation". Verio tech support
said that I have to set it up so that it checks the Pop server first, this
opens the SMTP port. They said that other people were doing it successfully
but that they had no idea how, or they would not tell me.
I use BellSouth for DSL connection with a static ip and I also tried their
mail server with the same result. I am assuming that they have the same
"Pop Before SMTP" protocol in place.
Why do I want it set up this way. I have another domain: xxx.net which is
pointed to my static ip. I set Exchange up last week and it was
successfully sending and receiving. I then got some rejections from RR
(Road Runner) and AOL that my account was blocked with the following mesage
(I blocked out the ip address with ??.??.??.?? and disguised the domain):
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------
The message cannot be delivered due to a configuration error on the server.
Please contact your Administrator.
http://www.mail-abuse.org/dul>
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------
When I went to www.mail-abuse.org/dul it said that Bellsouth listed a entire
range of ip addresses as dial-up and that many isp's were rejecting e-mail
from servers on dial-up addresses. Of course I have a static dsl, not
dialup, but they will not address the issue. They said to relay the mail
thru a smart host at my isp. That is why I am trying to use either the SMTP
server at my web site at Verio, or the SMTP server at my ISP, Bellsouth.Net.
Can anyone suggest how to get around the problem.
Thanks
Jeryl

It's not ideal, but since you're using a single static IP address, you could
have any host behind the Linksys make a POP request to the ISP's server and
it should then allow the Exchange Server to send smtp mail through it. To
your ISP, the POP and SMTP traffic all appear to be coming from the same IP
address.

Thanks for the reply Jeff. I can install Outlook on the Exchange box, but
how can I have Exchange get the Outlook client to make a POP request to open
the port. I could also write a small VB program to request from the POP
port but need some way to have Exchange run this program just prior to
uploading mail to the SMTP port. This is the part I do not know how to do.

Exchange can't check for POP first - it's a mail server, not a mail client.
Call BellSouth and see if they have an SMTP server you can use that doesn't
require this, or require SMTP authentication.

I spoke with Bellsouth and have escalated it two levels and all they can
tell me is to call Microsoft. If they have such a server I have not been
able to get it out of them.
Could I be configuring the Smarthost incorrectly? I will post the
information later this evening.

What did you ask them? The appropriate questions as I see them:
1. What is the FQDN of the SMTP server I can use?
2. Does it require that I authenticate to it in order to use it for outbound
mail?
If the answer to #2 is yes, you can't use it. And yes, you should post your
settings here.

Again, I thank you for your help. I set up an Internet Mail SMTP Connector
and "checked forward all mail through this connector to the following smart
hosts". I put mail.bellsouth.net as the smart host. On the Advanced tabl
under Outbound Security I tried with the following:
1 - Anonymous Access
2 - Basic Authentication
A - no username and no password
B - all permutations of my username and the correct password
Neither Option 1, 2A, or 2B worked.

I'm not familiar with how bellsouth has their SMTP servers configured, but I
would think you could jsut write a small script to check a POP3 mailbox
every 5 minutes or so and that should keep your IP in the allowed list. I
can't gurantee this would work, but I'd give it a try.

Hmm - which username/password? I wouldn't think you'd have one as it doesn't
sound like you have a POP account with bell south - did you check with their
tech support?

I used the only username/password I have. It is the same combination that I
use in Outlook and the same ones that I use in the Linksys router.

Did you check with Bell South support to confirm your setup?
Can you set up OE or something as a POP client and send out using that SMTP
server and using that name/password?

Yes I can send out and receive E-Mail using that mail server with the
username and password.
Lanwench - Thanks for your help. I am leaving on vacation and will be back
in 10 days and will contact Bellsouth again. I did contact them about
listing my IP on the DUL but they will not change the listing.

Hey Guys...
I happen to have the very same problem with the very same
configuration. I have been working with Exchange for too many years and
like to think that I know it pretty well.
Bellsouth does not allow any connections to port 25 from any Mail
server when using a RESIDENTIAL account. They only allow exchange
server to relay if you have a business account.
I have my own eMail provider and I am using them as the outgoing smart
host. Still having problems, as soon as I figure it out will post
solution.
Regards,
Lanman

Jeryl,
Did you ever find a solution for this? I am having the
exact same issue
thanks!

When trying to resolve the issue of RoadRunner blocking emails from
BellSouth addresses, it is not required to send through a Smarthost
although that can fix the problem. RoadRunner Identifies these "Dialup"
(yes DSL too) IP addresses via a reverse lookup of your Exchange server's
IP address. This typically results in an answer such as
adsl-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx.sip.bct.bellsouth.net where the xxx is an octet of
your IP address. Where as RoadRunner was expecting the host your Exchange
server specified with its helo command e.g. exchange.yourdomain.com.
In this situation, you need to get the pointer(PTR) record changed so that
your IP address resolves to the same hostname that your exchange server is
using in its helo command. For Bellsouth business accounts this is done by
you through a web portal at BellSouth that allows you to configure your DNS
records. For non-business accounts, those that get dynamic IP addresses,
you will need to upgrade to a business account, use a Smarthost that will
relay mail for you or get a different service provider.
Once the PTR record is correct RoadRunner will start accepting mail from
your domain directly without the need of a Smarthost.
