My current exchange 2000 server is running out of disk space and it's also on
a old server (PIII). I do have a new server to put exchange on it. how
can I move exchange to the new server?

Hi Tony,

set up the substitute exchange server in a separate network with the
target IP address, name it and configure it identical to the old
server. Copy the databases onto the new server. Test it.

For more infos you should give some more infos:
- which backup software do you use
- where are your exchange database sited - local on the server or on a
san?
- how many mailboxes are on that server (manually moving to the new
server may be an option)?
- must the new server be identical to the old one (ip address, name)?

Thank you for your comments, I hope this will give you more details.

Backup software - Veritas backupexec ver. 10d
Exchange DB are on the server.
I have at least 200 mailboxes.
I would perfer to have it identical to the old server. But if you think
that it better to build the new one different. I can do that too.

Hi,

Use the mover server method as described here:
http://www.swinc.com/resources/exchange/faq_db.asp?status=questions&faqID=1001&faqname=Exchange%202000§ionID=1024§ionName=Exchange%202000%20Move%20Server%20Method

Just skip all the steps where domain controllers are mentioned (I assume
that your exchange server is not also a DC).

Install a new server into the site, move the users and rehome the system and
public folders. Much easier and safer. Leave the old server running for a
short time so clients will update their profile.
After complete, uninstall the old server.
