A couple of questions:
What is a good way to monitor throughput of an Exchange Server? I'm looking
for messages received & messages sent per second ( or hour or day......).
One other post I found when researching this subject suggested using W2K
Performance Monitor>SMTP Server>Messages Sent, etc. The SMTP Server parameter
is missing from my Performance Monitor. Please advise.

Is there some place that references the given maximum throughput for various
hardware combinations? When we made the upgrade from 5.5 to E2K, the hardware
sizing was by the seat of my pants. Luckily, I seem to have done OK, but as I
prepare for another upgrade to newer hardware and Exchange 2003, I'd like to
have some numbers to submit to management.

As always, thanks in advance for all the wonderful advice!

That depends....

Using just the SMTP stack in W2K, I've hit over 100k messages an hour but
was limited in my testing my the receiving servers. With 5.5 I've gotten
around 15k/hr in production. After that, even new hardware doesn't help.
200* does much, much better.

What you'll want to watch for is the disk for queues/latency for the drive
you write the temp file to. If you're happy with the performance you've seen
with Exchange 2000, then you'll not need to change anything for 2003 unless
you're going to add in additional services (e.g. anti-spam, anti-virus).
Exchange 2003 is rarely limited in itself, but is dependant on the things
that serve it like AD, OS, Disk performance. Look there first.
