In Exchnage 2000 Server Manager I have a very large number of queues under
smtp protcol. What are these? Do they ever go away? There is no mail in
them but I was not sure if they belonged there.

They'll go away eventually. If you restart the SMTP service the empty ones
should disappear.

How many is a "very large number?"
