We are looking at performing email archiving for SOX compliance plus coming
up with a way to expand our mailbox capacity. Our remote OWA users keep
requesting larger mailboxes because they are sometimes on travel for months
and have no way to copy their files down to a PST file. The email builds up
and they have to start deleting things that they really want to keep in
order to keep the mailbox below the limits.

Last week we set through a Veritas Enterprise Vault demo and this looks
AWESOME!!! Is anyone out there using this product with their Exchange / OWA
and if so, how is it working out?

Thanks,
Fred Yarbrough

we're getting ready to install it for a pilot rollout...it does, indeed,
look terrific...lots of flexibility, and it appears that it will do
everything we want...not inexpensive, though...

Nothing but headaches since acquiring the software from the original
manufacturer who performed a half-baked installation on our single worm
drive. I too was impressed with the demo and network-based archive - the
concept is great and their presentation was slick. But this software is
extremely complex, somewhat unstable and buggy. My recommendation if you
decide to go with it is to get an experienced VAR that you can depend on to
maintain the solution. Credit goes-out to Symatec (whicih recently acquired
Veritas which acquired the original manufacturer) for raising the bar on
support (not that Veritas wasn't proficient, they just didn' have enough
experience with the product, and the original support crew from the original
manufacturer were utterly useless). Be very careful, and get a good VAR that
understands the product.

Tons of users have it, it's the absolute best product available for
the enterprise, not just Exchange. We deploy it for our customers and
have a pretty large one on the drawing board for internally.

Like Susan says though, it aint cheap. "If you have to ask you can't
afford" as we say on both sides of the pond.

I know this product very well, however I might be biased as it is the
product/unit I work for these days. One particular thing I have always
liked about EV (even before joining the team) is that you just don't have to
use it for Archiving email, but can also use it as a framework to archive
your file servers as well.

Symantec definately sees EV as one of their core products and it is starting
to show. The installation part is one of the key parts that has to be done
correctly, but that isn't something new. This counts for almost any software
product.

WE have been using it for the last 3 years. No problems to speak of, other
than be prepared to backup large amounts of data.

The install is key though.....

It's worth taking a look at www.aftermail.com, recently blogged about
here:

For more info you can find whitepapers & case studies here:

At additional cost of course. And for comparison, it's in the same
price range as any of the viable competitors, so the solution really
comes down to EV or not much.

And pony up for support. For even the simplest installations you're
going to need some hand holding at times. Or often, just a reminder
how to do something you haven't touched in a year.
