Our Exchange lab environment consists of three servers:

One Exchange 2003 running on Windows 2003 (all service packs and updates).
Two Windows 2003 DC's (all service packs and updates). One was an in-place
upgrade from Win2k, the other was built from scratch.

The domain is Ex2k3/Win2k3 native mode.

Can i add an Exchange 2000 server to this environment now that the domain
level has been raised and we're in 2k3 native mode?

Thanks!
jim

Yes. Exchange native mode simply means no more Exchange 5.5 servers.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for posting here.

From your description, I can see your Exchange Organization is in Native
Mode and Domain Function Level is in Windows Server 2003 where all Domain
Controllers are Windows Server 2003. If I am off base, feel free to let me
know.

First of all, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server is supported in a Microsoft
Windows Server 2003 Active Directory environment. However, you must install
and run Exchange 2000 on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer.
You cannot install and run Exchange 2000 on a Windows Server 2003-based
computer. If you install or try to install Exchange 2000 on a Windows
Server 2003-based computer, you may experience the following problems:

1. The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service does not run.
2. When you run the Exchange 2000 /forestprep command or the Exchange 2000
/domainprep command on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, the command
fails.

More info here:

The Information Store service does not start when you install Exchange 2000
on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, and the Exchange 2000 forestprep
command fails on the Windows Server 2003-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810591/en-us

Considering the information above, you must install Exchange 2000 Server in
a Windows 2000 Server¡£Additionally, since the Domain Function Level is in
Windows Server 2003 where all Domain Controllers must be Windows Server
2003. So the Windows 2000 Server with Exchange 2000 Server installed must
be Member Server. More info about Windows Server 2003 Domain Function
Level here:

How to raise domain and forest functional levels in Windows Server 2003

Hope this helps. Jim, I noticed that you often submit the same question in
several newsgroups. In order to avoid confusion, we usually only work with
customer on one thread, and archive all other duplicated posts. I hope you
can understand it can make us more convenient toward the solution and
lessen the confusion for both of us. So in the future, I hope you can
identify the property of your question and then submit it only on one
related newsgroup so that a dedicated engineer only focuses on this
question. I highly appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

Have a nice day!
