Hello All,

PLEASE HELP

If anyone could help with this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
This is all started with trying to remove a some spam filtering on our
Exchange 2000 Server During the process of removing this application
in Add/Remove Programs the application got hung up and gave message
called Install Service Failed. So after backing out of the application
and an attempt of rebooting the server to be sure it had any issues
cleared out. We did a few trial runs to see if our email was working
correctly. At first we were able to send and recieve email internally
in our own domain. And we could recieve email from external addresses,
but however we could not send email out to any external addresses. By
checking the queue in the Default SMTP Virtual Server I was noticing
that they were getting placed in there and not being redirected to
there outside destination.

So we made sure that all the SMTP and IIS services were started and yes

they were. I checked the System Manager in Exchange and checked all the

protocols. We tried restarting all the services including the one in
System Manager called Default Virtual SMTP Server in the Protocol
options. The system became unresponsive and would hang up. We tried
several reboots on the machine to bring it back up. The SMTP Service
and IIS Services both show they have started. The Default Virtual SMTP
Server however shows a RED X in the Exchange System Manager. I have
tried to manually start it but when ever I do the system just gets hung

up and becomes unresponsive. I tried going into Internet Management
Systems in Adminstrative Tools and that as well becomes unresponsive
and hangs up.

I know the problem lies in the SMTP Virtual Server in Exchange System
Manager not starting correctly I can still see all the previous data
from the mailboxes but now I cannot send or recieve any new email. I
dont know for sure if the mail is still be put in the queue of the
Default Virtual SMTP Server or not. I was just wondering if anyone
might have a solution to this and on how to maybe remove the Default
SMTP Virtual Server and reinstall it. I am hoping this will not effect
the current data in the mailboxes that is there, so far I have not
found any answers to that question.

Please help!!

Hi,

Any events logged in the application log??

It is possible to reinstall the SMTP service by reinstalling Exchange server
and the service packs - this should not have any other impact on the current
setup.

Just run setup from the exchange cd and select reinstallation.
