I have just completed an Exchange 2000 upgrade to Exchange 2003. Everything
went fine. I used KB article 307917 on “How to remove the first Exchange 2000
Server computer from the site.” I waited a few days for any fallout. No one
complained. I then turned off the old Exchange 2000 server. The following
week, a handful of users were complaining about how slow it was to open their
Outlook. They would then get the message – “Outlook is retrieving data from
the Microsoft Exchange Server . You can cancel the request or
minimize this message to the Windows taskbar until Outlook closes the message
automatically.” The server name that was displayed was the old server. I
verified that all public folders have migrated but they still get this
message when I turn the Information Store services back on.

Any ideas?

It sounds like Outlook is just confused as to where the user's mailbox
is. If you go into the Exchange account properties for one of these
users, does the Server Name show as the old server or the new one?

All users Exchange properties show the new server. A few things I noticed.
I started the old server back up. Started the Information Store and System
Attendant. They no longer get the message.

Looking at the Public Folders Instances on the old server, I can see 3 of
the Public Folders. What is the difference between the Public Folder
instances and the Public Folder? Looking at the replication status on the old
server, it shows they have been Both Modified. I thought that I had moved
them. Could this have something to do with users having their Outlook start
slow? How do I get rid of the old server?

Deb,

I'm having the exact same problem here. Did you find out was was causing
this? If I find anything that helps I'll post here.

I have not found anything that points to this issue. I really want to get rid
of the old server but can't. If I find anything, I will also post.
