I have recently installed a new Exchange 2003 server (sp1) into an
existing Exchange 2000 organisation.

Everything went well with the install, and I can create accounts on the
new server etc, but cannot get any mail or public folder replicas onto
the new 2003 server. I am able to send emails internally and externally
from mailboxes on the new server but cannot receive anything. I am sure
this is due to the Exch 2000 server being setup with a smarthost in the
SMTP Virtual Server. (which is actually running on the same dual-homed
server, so the smarthost is the loopback address)

When I remove the smarthost IP address from both servers' smtp virtual
server entry, and setup an SMTP connector I still can't get anything to
replicate or deliver to the new 2003 server, although outgoing still
continues to work as normal from both servers.

On the 2000 server, IIS is running on port 5593 instead of 80, because
it is dual homed and the web monitoring software (Web Marshal) is
running on port 80. This caused some problems getting into the
properties of the public folders to setup replication, so I had to
temporarily bring down the web access and set IIS back to port 80 to
get into these property pages, however I had to change this back to
allow web access again.

Could the IIS running on a non-standard port have anything to do with
the problem replicating and the non-delivery of emails (both internal
and external) to the new Exch 2003 server?

Any other suggestions for what could be at the root of this problem?

I am able to ping, resolve dns names, connect to A/D roles on other
servers etc, so nothing like that seems to be affecting the server.

Thanks
James

Hi,

You must remove the smart-host configuration from the SMTP virtuel server
and instead create this on a SMTP connector. If you don't the original
server will send all mails to the smart-host (also the mails destined for
users on the new server).

After performing this change you need to look at the queues on the old
server for mailboxes on the new server - where do these queues point to?

I have already removed the smarthost from the virtual server on the
2000 server, and created an smtp connector. This seems to be working
fine, as all mail from the 2000 servers is going out and in fine, and
mail from the 2003 server is sending externally ok.

Under smtp on the 2000 server, the queue for 2003server.mycompany.com
says (remote delivery). Does this mean that its still trying to route
messages for the new server out through the mail marshal (which handles
all external email)?

The smtp queue for mycompany.com says (local delivery).

James

Quick update ..

Ok, I forgot that I'd changed the port of the Exch 2003 smtp virtual
server to port 97 (this is what the old exchange server is set to) when
messing around with the settings, before I realised about the smarthost
problem. I changed this back to 25, and now I can transfer external and
internal mail to the new server ..... however!

Mail is now working externally and internally from 2000 to 2003 server,
and 2003 server out to the internet, but not to the 2000 server.

I think this is because the smtp virtual server running on 2000 server
is set to port 97 (and has been the whole time) This is because the
MailMarshal which sits on the same box as 2000 server is running on
port 25.

Can I configure exchange to transfer smtp traffic from the 2003 server
to the 2000 server on port 97? If I need to re-configure the
MailMarshal to listen on a different port, I am concerned that this
will affect my incoming internet mail.

The queue on the 2003 server which transfers mail to the 2000 server is
reporting that 'The connection was dropped by the remote host' . I
assume what is happening is that the 2003 server is trying to transfer
the mails on port 25 and connecting to the MailMarshal box, which is in
turn rejecting it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

James
