I have three 2000 servers performing different roles that are DC and GC, one
of them is my exchange server, which is not the FSMO role machine (PDC). I
want to remove my old exchange server completely from my network. I have
built a member server and installed exchange 2000 on it and I have replicated
and rehomed everything following article 307917. I will be moving mailboxes
as one of the last steps. Can I then demote the original exchange server that
was a DC and GC without any issues? Keep in mind that I still have two other
DCs and GCs. I have also moved some mailboxes for testing to the new server
and they can send and receive e-mails.

I moved mialboxes and am using the new exchange server. However, if i don't
keep SMTP running on the old server then I can't receive outside e-mail. I
also can't view "group schedules" in Outlook. I can view the individual
schedules though. On the new exchange server their is no service Called MS
Schedule Plus Free-Busy Connector but their is on the original exchange
server. I wouild like to be able to de-commision the old exchange server but
if I have to leave SMPT running on it to receive external e-mail. What's up?

Hi,

You need to reconfigure your firewall to forward all incoming mails to the
new server.

You don't need the schedule+ free/busy connector.

After performing the firewall reconfiguration you should try to stop all
exchange services on the original server and keep them stopped for a week -
if everything works you can then uninstall exchange etc.

Thanks Leif,
I have had all of the Exchange services turned off of the original Exchange
server for over a day and things work fine. It's only if I stop SMTP on that
server that I can't receive incoming emails. Once I changed every e-mail
account to look at the new server I was then able to view "Group Schedules".
I have Network Solutions doing external DNS and our MX records for both of
the exchange servers. If I remove the original exchange server from that site
or maybe change the IP address in the MX record of the original exhange
server to the same as the new exchange server it might work. I never
configured the router to point at the original Exchange server. i could try
that as well.
