I am planning to move an Exchange 2003 server (running on Windows 2003
server) to new hardware by doing a full backup of the old server and using
Backup Exec IDR to restore it to new hardware. In testing this I have found
that when I backup a PC and restore to a different box, the new box is unable
to log on to the domain. I get an error that says "Windows cannot log on to
the domain either because the domain controller is down ... or your computer
account was not found." I have to take the PC offline, remove it to the
domain, then reset the account; put it back online, and join the domain in
order to get it to the point where I can log on to the domain again.

The question is, if I remove the Exchange server from the domain while it it
disconnected and then join it again, will doing that create any issues with
active directory , authentication, email, etc? The idea of removing the
Exchange server and not being able to get it back on the domain is a bit
scary.

Hi Leif,

Actually, your respone did not get to the heart of the question but I really
appreciate it anyway. The article you referred to is the one I was planning
to use to guide me through the process. it's just that I have seen issues
with trying to replace a machine with another machine that has been imaged.
THE SID changes becasue the hardware changes, even though the software is
cloned. the Windows domain refuses to let the machine in. I was worried that
perhaps the Windows domain would not let the new machine in and if I had to
back out, it would not let the old one in either. In the end I decided to
use another approach and instead of replacing the old server I added a new
one and am migrating users to the new one.

Now I have a new problem: Users on teh new server can send & receive email
to each other and can send & receive to the outside world but can not send to
user account that are on the original server. They can RECEIVE from user
account on the original server but cannot SEND. Do you know what need to do
to fixthis?

Thanks,

bb

Hi,

Thanks for posting here.

Based on my knowledge, we have official article as below indicating moving
Exchange Server to new hardware with the same name.

How to move Exchange 2003 to new hardware and keep the same server name
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=822945

Per my research we don??t have article regarding moving Exchange Server to
new hardware with different name. However we can follow the routine
migration steps to build a new Exchange Server with different name
coexisting with old Exchange Server, and then move content of old Exchange
Server to new Exchange Server; at last remove old Exchange Server in the
organization. Detailed steps as below:

Step 1: First of all, build up a Windows Server 2003 member server to host
a new Exchange Server 2003 with different name.

Step 2: Move mailboxes from the original Exchange Server 2003 to the new
Exchange 2003 Server. More info here:

821829 Moving Mailboxes in Exchange Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=821829

Step 3: Keep the temporary environment (with all Exchange Servers online
running) working for several days and make sure that all users login
Outlook once to access their mailbox which will re-direct the request to
the new Exchange Server so that Outlook will cache new Exchange Server name
in local registry.

Step 5: If everything is fine and you would like to remove original
Exchange Server 2003, you could follow the Knowledge Base article below.

Actually, the contents which are needed to transfer from the original
Exchange Server to another Exchange Server include the following.

- Replicate All Public Folders to Another Server
- Rehome the Offline Address Book Folder
- Rehome the Schedule+ Free Busy Folder
- Rehome the Recipient Update Service (RUS)
- Designate Another Server to Be the Routing Group Master
- Rehome Connectors to Another Server

For the steps to implement the process above, please refer to the article
below.

822931 How to remove the first Exchange Server 2003 computer from the
administrative group
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;822931

Step 6: After the rehoming process above, you could Insert the Exchange
Server 2003 CD-ROM in the original Exchange Server computer, and then click
Remove for each component that has been installed, which will remove this
old Exchange Server from Active Directory.

Hope this helps. If you have any further concern, feel free to let me know.
It is always my pleasure to work with you. I am looking forward to your
reply.

Have a nice day.

Steven,

Thanks for your response and the good references you pointed out. I just
now got things going by granting SMTP relay permission from the old server to
the new one. Now mail is flowing as it should.

Now I can proceed with the migration and then remove the first exchange
server, following the instructions in the link that you sent.

Thanks for your help with this.
