Can anyone provide a document on exactly what the Mailbox Distinguished name
is? When does it get created? Can it be different than a username? Where
can I go to view this?

If you're talking about the legacy Exchange distinguished name, it's the
legacyExchangeDN attribute in Active Directory. Originally, this was the
distinguished name in Exchange 5.5, and at that time it contained the path
to the containers in which the mailbox resided. Today, in Exchange 2000 and
up the path doesn't really follow any container structure. It's set up when
you first install Exchange, and I believe that the common name part of the
legacyExchangeDN is set to the initial value of the mailbox Alias
(mailNickname attribute) at the time the mailbox is created.

I am using the Exmerge program to creat pst backups for my users. Exmerge
seems to only want to work with the Distingushed name, which seems to be
created when the user account is initially created. If I change a person's
username, it seems that the mailbox Distiguished name doesn't change too.
I would like to know where I can see the "distinguished name", incase a
person's username has changed and I don't know the original usename (which
will be the distinguished name)...I think.

You can use ADSI Edit and look at the user's legacyExchangeDN property.

Ed,
I followed your advice. Found the Active Directory Service Interfaces
(ADSI), found the legacyExchangeDN...perfect. Thanks.
