I'm running Exchange server 2000 on Windows Server 2000.

I understand the size limit for the IS is 16 GB and I am getting very close
to that. I don't want to force people to copy important company emails to a
PST that would be harder to back up. I'm wondering if there is another
solution.

Can I simply create a second Mailbox Store under the First Storage group or
create a Second Storage Group under the server? My PC has plenty of disk
space to hold 2 16 GB ISs. Once I create a second store, can I move some
users from the first to the second to balance the store usage? Is there any
disadvantage to having two stores? Will it be transparent to the users? We
use a third party program to download emails from a POP3 ISP and SMTP them
to Exchange. Will having two ISs cause any problems there?

Thanks,

Bill

Are you running Exchange 2000 Enterprise or Standard?

Standard is limited to 16GB and 1 Mailobx Store.
Enterprise has no data limit and can have a maximum of 20 stores.

If you are running Exchange 2000 STD then you need to look at upgrading to
Exchange 2000 Enterprise or Exchange 2003 Standard with SP2 (whihc will give
you 75GB)

Thanks. I'm on Enterprise so there is no issue. I just wasn't aware that
limitation was on Standard only. What's the reason for the limit? Is it a
technical difference or a marketing decision?

It was a marketing decision that has been in existence in older versions
too.
In Exchange 2003 SP2 MS got realistic and raised the bar to 75GB.
In Exchange 2007 STD they allow 5 databases and no data limit. They also
allow Local Continuous Replication on the storage groups which is great.
