Does anyone know of an MS article that describes how to roll back the
changes made in AD from running Ex2k3 forestprep and domainprep? Unless i'm
mistaken, there are versions of forestprep and domainprep specifically for
Ex2k3 to prepare the directory for the first Exchange 2003 server
installation.

We're currently in Ex2k and Win2k native mode. I'm going to run Ex2k3
"preps" this weekend, but i need to know how to undo the preps work in case
something goes wrong.

Any help is appreciated!

There isn't really a "rollback" for the procedure. A system state backup is
a good idea. It is highly unlikely anything will go wrong.

Considering that the forestprep is a schema update there is no rollback for it
other than a redeploy of all of your domain controllers.

Well, there *is* an autoritative restore -- but the instructions for
that begin with "First, the sky gets very dark." Smile

An auth restore will not back out a schema change unfortunately. You need to
shut down all running DCs, pull out a DC for each domain from the deep freeze
from prior to the schema mod and all packaged together at once so they are all
up to date with each other, then wipe and repromote the other DCs.

That's a bummer. Good to keep in mind, though.

Come to think about it, I was thinking of the situation where you're
trying to _recover_ something that was deleted, not to remove
something that was added. DOH!

Well, i ended up just backing up the system state on the GC. It went off
without a hitch, so i guess i'm in the clear.

Thanks for everyone's feedback!

Another alternative is to set up one DC to receive delayed replication by
making it part of another site and setting the rep for something like a week
or so. Make sure it carries no roles and is not a GC. In DNS turn of the
ability for users to auth to it, and there you go. An off-site or on-site
live backup of your domain without backing up and restoring. This is not to
say that this voids out the necessity of backing up, but it does provide you
with the ability to chainsaw the other DC objects and rep partners, seize
roles, and promote it to GC. We have a number of these set up on VMWare. You
can house about 3 or 4 of them comfortably on lightweight hardware because
they basically are responsible for nothing and have them off-site or on-site
for that matter. Each one of the three we have are set for different rep
times. Monday\Thur and one every 2 weeks. This allows for a live object
recovery.

Hi! man,

I think forestPrep will not caouse any harm to your exesting OS. It
just prepares your forest to hold different Exchange Server
objects/attribute in Active directory. It'll not change anything to the
eisting objects. It should not caus nay problem.
