I would like to create a new Exchange 2000 (Server 2000) in the role of a
recovery backup server.

I understand the recovery server would have to have the same store names and
first admin group names, but be in a different forrest.

Are there any good articles describing the best procedures for accomplishing
this task.

eg; should the recovery server be in the same domain as the current primary
exchange server, should I run the /forest prep and /domain prep utilities
prior to setting up exchange?
How to set up proper domain trusts for ADM...etc...

I'd like to be able to use the new recovery server easily and smoothly if
the primary server fails.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

This article explains how to set up a recovery server:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813337

What kind of recovery are we talking. You won't be able to switch your user
mailboxes to a new server easily if the original server fails.

Leif,

I'd like to create a second ex2000 server for both disaster recovery and in
case the primary server goes down.

I plan to make the recovery server part of the same domain, but set up a
different active directory forrest? Is there a better way, without using
clustering?

Hi,

It is not possible to install an exchange 2000 server in a new ad forest and
make it part of an Exchange organization in another forest.

For fault tolerance you need to look into clustering (remark that there are
several types of clustering, both Microsoft cluster and 3-party clustering).

Leif, Here's what I've done to date:

I've set up another DC running Server 2000 OS, made it a member of our PDC
running our production exchange store. I ran the forest prep and domain prep
prior to installing exchange. I've installed exchange2000 and all the Sevice
Packs, so both are the same.

Your really saying there is no way to use the server either as a
backup/restore server or simply as a another server to use to send and
receive mail in case the PDC goes down?

I need to set up a trust etc....
