Messages to domains using greylists for spam filtering sit in the SMTP queue
until the retry limit expires. Manually telneting to the host gives a "450
Recipient address rejected greylisted for 300 seconds....." error
How can Exchange 2000 SMTP server be configured to deal with this situation.

From what I understand, the remote server is using an anti spam technique
that bounces a message first and then accepts it if the sending server
retries within 5 minutes. Any longer than that and the procedure starts
over. By default, Exchange has a first timeout of 10 minutes which is too
long for this grey list implementation.

You should be able to configure the retry settings on your SMTP VSI so that
it will work around this.

In Exchange System Manager navigate to:
(Exchange) -> Servers -> -> Protocols -> SMTP ->
Default SMTP Virtual Server
Right click and select "properties".
Select the "Delivery" tab.
Modify the "First retry interval" to something less than 5 minutes such as 1
or 2.
Select OK.

After this you may want to restart the service or "Force connection" on the
backed up queue twice in order to free up the backlog.
