|

Hello,
I am looking for instructions on how to setup our exchange server to forward
email to a different exchange server if the email does not exist in AD.
The scenario is that we have a server in London (Xchnage 2003) and a server
in India (Also Xchange 2003). All email currently comes to the London server
and obviously sent to the london users mailbox. I want to configure the
London server so that when an email comes in and the email address does not
exist on the London server it automatically sends the email to the India
server.
Here is what I have done so far.
On the london system I have gone into the properties of the SMTP connecter.
In the messages tab I have put the WAN IP address of the India system in the
'forward all mail with unresolved receipients to host'. I found on the
internet that I must put in square brackets around it, is this right?
On the India system, I have gone into Exchange system manager and under
recipients policies > email addresses, I have added the domain to the list as
and SMTP address, however I have not ticked the option to have it as an
authoritive domain.
Then I created a test user with an exchange mailbox and added an email
address of the domain.
So when I send an email, I hope to have the email send to london and then
the london system find that the email address does not exist so it forwards
the email to India to find if the email address exists there and then deliver
it to the mailbox in India if it does.
When I try to send a test message from hotmail to an email address in India
I get a 550 error unable to relay.
Could someone tell me where I am going wrong?
Many thanks,
Luke

I think you're over complicating it but it kind of depends on your network
setup.
We do this between an England/Ireland office, but both servers are in the
same AD Forest, and are in the same Exchange organisation. For one company,
this is kind of normal I guess - exchange is then (mostly) clever enough to
know where to send mail, based on the user's home mailbox server as
specified in Active Directory.
Is the email domain for India's users the same as the UK's? Or something
else? |

James,
Thanks for your help on this. For arguement sake the domain in London is
called LONDON and the domain in India is called INDIA. If I change the domain
in India to LONDON so they are both on the same domain and then add it to
Exchange manager as another exchange server. Is that basically what you are
saying??
Could you outline quick instructions on how to do this?

It's not really a quick task, and certainly not as simple as just renaming a
domain. Assuming you're talking about Active Directory here, and the two are
indeed two completely separate domains, you're looking at basically
destroying the India domain, then re-dc-promoing the server in india to be
another server for the London domain. At that point you should be able to
get Exchange working.
However - before you go down that road, I'd do some more investigation on
just Exchange; it may well be that you can sort out the relaying without
compromising security. You get the relay error because you're effectively
asking the London server to send a mail to a completely different domain.
For users within the London network, they can send mail to any domain
because they are authenticated, but when a mail comes in from the outside
world, it's effectively "anonymous". The relay protection is a security
feature. Off the top of my head I'm not sure where to look exactly, but when
I get 5 mins I'll poke around in our server to see if there is a quick fix.

the india system in the 'forward all email with unresolved hosts box' Is this
right?
Sorry to keep pestering you, your help is appreciated.
Many thanks,
Luke

Ok I now have stopped getting the relay error messages or NDR's and now the
message appears to be transferred according to the message tracking. However
how do I configure the receiving exchange server to collect these emails? The
email seems to dissapear and does not get delivered.
Many thanks,
Luke
