I have an exchange 2007 box which I want to move all users over to
eventually but for now I have moved over only 3 mailboxes. At this
point, store.exe is already using 7GB RAM and the machine is acting
really sluggish because of that (only 8GB total). The exchange 2003
box for our entire company only had 4GB and was fine so I thought 8GB
would be ample. Is this a setting somewhere? does exchange just use
all available and give it back as needed?

Define "sluggish". |

Sluggish, well, when remoted into the machine or at the console the
view takes a few seconds to refresh from all white to the window I am
working in. switching between sections in EMC takes 5 or 6 seconds and
just general lethargy...Picture running server 2003 on a p2 450. kinda
like that. Server is a dual xeon e5310 with 8GM RAM. Should be
sufficient for just 3 users with a total of 10Gb mailbox size. That
said, this is a single server deployment running all roles. but,
should I really have to put 16+ GB RAM in a computer for just 10
users? |

Well, I'll just put in another 8GB and overkill or not, that ought to
hit the spot, |

hmm, I assume this is Windows 2003 SP2?

Think about disabling chimney if you havent already.
THe EMC is slow as a rule however
8MB is a little tight for all roles, but may work.
How about the clients?
If you open the connection status (Ctrl and Right CLick the Outlook
tray icon) how many ms for the average response?
Perfmon or run the Performance troubleshooter in the EMC toolbox to
test your setup ( Exbpa as well in that toolbox). |

We have about 900 users and a single mailbox server with 8GB RAM and it uses
all of it. Most of the time the server runs with only 170MB free. Some of
the admins were worried about it. Turn outs the new 64-bit architecture,
store.exe will use all available memory and give it back when necessary.
Haven't had a single memory problem.
I understand about the "sluggish" feeling, the EMC (via MMC) seems slow to
me too. I'd suggest using the PowerShell more, its work much better after
you get the hang of it.
