I'm having a problem that our Outlook/Exchange response intermittantly slows
to a crawl or a stop. What I've finally found is that it happens when a
write is occurring on one of our message store .stm databases. It's only one
of several and the slowdown only occurs when that file is being written into.
I found out using Sysinternals Filemon. Can you suggest the best way to
clear this problem?

Is it on DAS, SAN, NAS?
Is there anything logged in the event logs? |

Right then, time for some performance monitoring on the disks and
Exchange. You can then get a little closer to the general performance
of the disk.
If this a busy system? |

Done and what we found by running perfmon and filemon simultaneously on
screen is that avg. disk sec/read slows to a crawl only when one particular
..stm database is being written to. The write takes MUCH longer than any
other writes as well. Unless you have a better idea I'm planning on creating
a new message store and moving all the mailboxes to it in hopes of leaving
the problem with that .stm behind.

Well last weekend I added drive space moved all the users in my L-M message
store to a new store, eliminating the streaming database that was being
written to during the slowness (L-M Store.stm). It seemed to solve the
problem but today the problem is back and the problem is writing to L-M
Store2.stm, the replacement for the old one. So the trouble moved with the
mailboxes. Is there any way to find out more about what it being written
when it happens? Thanks again for your help.

I doubt there is a problem with the .STM file. This problem is likely due to
the behavior of the system. Read the following two articles - these should
give you enough insight to understand what happens when you move mailboxes.
The problem is likely due to:
a) inbound internet email
b) email being converted from .EDB to .STM and/or vice versa
c) non-mapi clients
d) large attachments

Also, be sure Anti-Virus is not scanning these files.

I think you should get your SAN reseller or support folks to do some
tests on it. I want to stress that it's not the SAN that's suspect;
rather that you need to get some SAN based I/O statistics rather than
the rudimentary ones you can so with Exchange.
