We are running Exchange 2003. Certain hosts sending mail to us will always
cause this event. The odd thing is that the email from some of these hosts
always gets through and the email from some of these hosts never gets
through. I have read the article "How to troubleshoot the "504 need to
authenticate first" SMTP
protocol error". I have read everything I can find on this forum that is
related but I can't find anything that's helpful. If all the messages were
getting through, I wouldn't worry about it but since some are not, I need to
resolve it.

Update:
I have done the Exch50AuthCheckEnabled suggestion. This "appears" to have
eliminated the 7010 events. I am still getting 7004 events from certain hosts
and am not receiving email from them. The odd thing about this is the other
host is sending us and email. Why is my server sending the xexch50 command
and why is the other server responding with 504 need to authenticate first
when they are sending email to us?

Hi Doug

Please make ensure that your default smtp virtual server settings
authentication is set to Anonymous,Basic,Windows authentication are enabled.
If you enabled this settings on your deafult SMTP Virtual Server, make ensure
that you configure a new SMTP connector for those particular domain, and try
to restart your smtp service and check for the mail flow.

Hope it will works...
Good luck

This is normal if they server indicated in the 7004 is an out_of_ org server
or internet servers (E2k or E2k3). Exchange 5.5 with 5.5.2657.72 or higher
IMCs
will respond back to this with a 7004 event " 505 Authentication required"
This is
normal when sending to Exchange 55. servers. You can configure this
behavior with the HKLM\
System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SMTPSVC\XEXCH50\SuppressExternal to
1.(DWORD) to control Exchange from attempting to send XEXCH50 outside of the
org
