Domino 5 to exchange

we're switching from notes/domino to exchange 2000. does
the migration tool require that a domino server be running
during the process? we only have the one box and it is in
desperate need of re formatting. i need to migrate the
mailboxes but won't be able to format my drive if the
domino server still needs to be running. if it doesn't
need to run, then i could just copy the database files to
a client machine and migrate them from there. any help
would be appreciated.
