Hi all,

Currently we have Exchange 2000 running on Windows 2000 cluster with
one virtual Exchange server, let call it EX-2K (this is the virtual
server name). In a DR situation, can I recover the Exchange server to
a single server? Can I setup a single server Windows 2000 and call it
EX-2K then run the "Setup in Disaster Recovery Mode"?

This is assuming that Active Directory had been recovered successfuly
and it is awares of an exisiting EX-2K in the forest.

Any help or advise on this recovery would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

My advice is to:

1. Upgrade to Windows Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2003. You should never
run highly available (and thus extremely important) applications on 6 yeard
old operating systems and 6 year old applications that are not in mainstream
support.

2. Once you have upgraded, research standby clustering.

Hi Russ,

Thank you for your advise. We are planning to upgrade to Windows 2003
and Exhange 2003 in early Jan. However we are doing a DR excercise at
the end of this month and it is based on the current system and apps.
My question still remain: Can I restore a EVS from a cluster to a
single server?

Thanks again.

You can treat it according to this KB
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297289/en-us, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Go to management and tell them that you would like to discuss putting it off
as the DR exercise will be worthless once you upgrade. Tell them that it
would be so much more valuable to do the testing in February after you are
up and running on the new platform. Make sure they understand that the
processes are very different for 2003 than they are for 2000 so there is
almost no value in doing the exercise in December.
