Hello there,
I have a exchange 2000 Sp3+ rollup September on windows 2000 SP4.
Since of late, i've been getting a lot of undelivered emails to most of the
common emails destination
domains like hotmail and yahoo.
The mail is sent but gets returend with,
Could not deliver the message in the time limit specified. Please
retry or contact your administrator.
When i checked my message queue i see thousands of domains with most of them
with the right mark sign and
some with retry sign.
It seems like the messages in the queue are not moving. I also dont get any
related error messages on the event log.
can some one shed me some light on this regard ?
Thanks
Shiv

Shivi,
Your server may be experiencing the problem described in this article:
The Remote Simple Mail Transfer Protocol Service Rejected AUTH Negotiation
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329636
If this doesn't solve the problem, you can use Diagnostic Logging to
determine the root of a transport issue. To enable Diagnostic Logging on the
MSExchangeTransport service:
1. Start Exchange System Manager.
2. Navigate to the server object.
3. Right-click , and then click Properties.
4. Click the Diagnostic Logging tab.
5. Under Services, click MSExchangeTransport.
6. Under Categories, set the SMTP Protocol Logging Level to maximum.
7. Force a connection for the queue that's in a retry state (restarting
SMTP service will accomplish this, too) so the delivery will be attempted
again.
8. Check the application event log to see if additional events are logged
that might explain the problem.
If you are familiar with netmon, you could also try using it to troubleshoot
the problem.

Hi Jenny,
Thanks for your response.
I've never experienced such a peculier problem with exchange 2000.
I checked for the article, but it doesnt relate to my problem.
I enabled everything under the MSExchangeTransport service in Diagnostic
Login,
but dont see any events which helps my problem.
Still i got thousands of queues piled up on the server. Strange thing is,
incoming mail works fine.
Today when i checked the queue, I see,
For Hotmail.com - The connection was dropped by the remote host.
For Yahoo.com - The status is Ok, but i've got some 3500 emails queued up
and it doesnt move.
And some domains with 1 or 2 emails left on the queue and many with no
emails at all and
having the queue active. (doesnt close it for some reason!!)
This is quite strange and all of this happend without doing any changes to
the setup.
I did install the September security rollup after getting this problem but
had no joy.
Is there anything else that i can do to diagnost the issue.
Thank You
Shivi

Hi..
I found the cause of the problem. (I think)
My server is receiving a lot of Spam to non existing email ids and
eventually
trying to send an NDR, where are the source address is also invalid.
This is getting piled up on the queues and slowing down the legitimate mail
delivery.
Now..need a solution.
Why is Microsoft exchange Exchange server so lazy to check the existence of
the email ID before
accepting any emails for the local users. ??

Shivi,
Exchange server does not do reverse lookups on the email addresses of the
sender. The following article explains the type of reverse dns lookup
Exchange does:
The "Perform Reverse DNS Lookup for Incoming Messages" Option Is for Host
Name Resolution
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297412
In regards to your question about the spam NDR's slowing delivery of
legitimate emails, you might want to consider implementing a spam filtering
program that removes the majority of incoming spam before it hits the email
server.
Another possible workaround is to disallow NDR's on Exchange. The caveat to
this is it will prevent ALL NDR's from being sent by Exchange. The
following article explains how to disable the NDR's:
How to Control Non-Delivery Reports Using Exchange 2000
