We have Exchange 2000 running on Win2k server. We have some users that do
not show an alias or mailbox in Active Directory. So when you right mouse
to do Exchange tasks the only option is to enable messaging, no option to
add or delete mailbox.

If we try to add this user in with other users then we get the error stating
that the user already has a mailbox. How can we resolve this?

How did you originally create their mailbox? Did you just go into AD Users
and Computers and create a mailbox for them when creating the user?

When you bring up the properties of the user do you see an email addresses
and Exchange Advanced tab?

If you do see those tabs what is on the email addresses tab? Are any proxy
addresses listed there?

You need to ensure that your RUS is stamping your user objects. Do you have
a RUS for this domain? Is it pointed to valid Exchange and AD servers?

All users were created the same, using AD Users and Computers.

Not on the users in question -> more detail below

> If you do see those tabs what is on the email addresses tab? Are any
proxy

What is RUS?

More detail of problem:

If I go into Active Directory Users and Computers on the Exchange server
itself and select one of the users n question and user the right mouse
button and choose Exchange tasks (same as when I want to add an existing
user to Exchange) the Exchange Task Wizard launches and shows me the
available tasks.

If it is a user that doesn't have a mailbox it will have "create mailbox" as
an option. These particular users do not show an Exchange Alias or Mailbox
in the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC. If I select the user and
goto Exchange tasks then my only option is Enable Instant Messaging (which I
believe is available because you can use your Exchange server as a IM
server).

If I create a new user without adding it to Exchange and then try to select
both the new user and user in question and run the Exchange tasks I will get
a warning informing me that the user in question already has a mailbox.

Another note, when I go into properties on the user in question the only
Exchange Tabs I see are "Exchange General" and "Exchange Features" but I'm
unable to make any changes to these tabs. On a user that is working
properly I can see "E-mail Addresses" in addition to the other two mentioned
and can make changes to anyone of the tabs.

I hope this clarifies the problem I'm experiencing. I've never ran into
this issue before and it's hard to explain, so hopefully I've provided
enough information.

How many DCs do you have? When you are mailbox enabling the user what DC
are you connected to? When you then go back to see if the user has the
correct attributes what DC are you connected to?

If you have mailbox enabled the users then they should have both the email
addresses and Exchange Advanced tabs. It could be some sort of AD
replication that does not allow you to see those attributes from this DC
yet.

The RUS runs under the System Attendant process and its function is to stamp
mail properties onto users. If your RUS is not functioning properly then
your users will never be 'mail enabled'.

We have two domain controller in one domain. I always use the MMC on the
Exchange server itself because I haven't loaded the management tools on our
primary controller yet. So all the users are created in the same fashion.

I'm going to read through the KB and check the event logs again. I would
think if it was a replication issue then it would be happening on more than
just the 7 (out of 350) users we have this problem with. Thanks for the
input, I know that if all else fails I can delete and recreate.

"Enable Messaging" isn't an option or form of words I
recognise. Where are you doing the right click > exchange
tasks from? If it's not on the exchange server itself, do
you get different options on that server?

Are the users in the same domain as the exchange server
or if not, has the /domainprep been done on the domain
where the users reside.

Yes they are all in the same domain, we have only one domain.
