Currently have 1 exchange, 1 store, size is much to large. I would
like to create 1 or 2 additional physical exchanger servers and move
mailboxes to new stores on those servers.

1. what if anything must be done to ensure that mail will flow
between the boxes and the outside world both incoming and outgoing?
-have read some posts that you only need install the 2nd exchange
server and move mailboxes?

2. once all mailboxes are moved from the existing first store, can
first store be taken offline to be defragmented to regain space
without affecting mail flow?

Thanks in advance for any help.

1. Yes, you just want to install your 2nd Exchagne server and move
mailbox/public/system folders to new servers. If you want you can put these
two servers on the same routing groups for a while to make sure your mailflow
works as it is.

2. Yes, technically. or you can delete the database on your first Exchange
server and recereate another one.

3. Yes, you can have your first exchange server be FE serve. There is a
check-box under Properties, general tab, in Microsoft Exchange where you
want to check so your first Exchange 2003 server will be a front-end.

1a. please define routing group.

3a. i want to make sure that the users continue to be able to gain
access to email via OWA through 1 server does this require front end
back end? or in scenario 1 below, users can log into existing owa
and gain access to any additional servers?

1. If you google Exchagne 2003 routing group, you will find many articles
about this. Here is one example.
http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/exchange2003/exchange2003_routing.htm

2. You probably want to set up a front end server on your first Exchagne
server. So, users can access their mailboxes via first Exchange (Front-end)
server which is your OWA server.

The front end server will be proxied to the back end server after you
assigned the front end role on your first Exchagne server. Only MAPI
connections could reach the mailboxes on the front end server.

Do you think about setting up an temporay 3rd Exchange server for Front end
server? Tihs way you can move the mailboxes from your first exchange server
to 2nd one. Then you should be able to assign the OWA role to your first
exchange server upon completion of moving your mailboxes.
