Hello,
I'm looking to buy an AV for exchage in our office. I've
heard about 2 products TrendMicro- Scanmail and Sybari-
Antigen.
I just wanted to find out from the people who are using
them and how they feel about product and would they
recommend them. Is there a down side or a plus from each
product.
any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Nick

I think those are the 2 most recommended products for Exchange.
They both have basic anti-spam measures as well.

Your current choices are the two best. I would buy either.

Does the software scan only the email or does it actually
scan the server for virus as well?
Right now I have Symantec AV installed on our server. Do I
have to uninstall the symantec first or can I just leave
it as it is and just install Antigen/TrendMail.
Thanks,
Nick

I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. 99% effective isn't good
enough with AV, so I am willing to spend the extra money.

I must respectfully dissent. Though Trend may the best for Exchange, it is
vastly overpriced. For our environment, swtiching to Trend would have cost
us TWICE as much. So, we stuck with McAfee. We do get
governmental/educational discounts so maybe Trend was not as willing to play
ball on those, who knows. At any rate, we are talking 18K vs 36K of your
tax dollars, if you want an idea of the numbers involved.

You will note that most of the antivirus software complaints in here are for
McAfee, CA, Symantec. You rarely see any problems related to Sybari or
Trend.
Trend ScanMail is AV for Exchange only - they also make ServerProtect for
the file system, and OfficeScan for centralized AV for workstations. You can
buy a 'bundled' product, NeatSuite, which is a good bargain. It's what I use
and have never had a problem with it (nor a virus; knock wood).
You really want to uninstall whatever antivirus you have installed already,
before installing anything new.

What she said
Seriously though, my "day job" we use exactly that product suite - ScanMail,
ServerProtect, and OfficeScan. Nothing has gotten through.

If you are ONLY going to add ScanMail, you should be fine - I assume you are
not currently scanning the exchsrvr directories with file level antivirus -
this can cause major problems with Exchange. If you go with a new product
suite which includes file-level scanning, then you should remove your
current product then install the new.

Antigen 7.5's "Anti-Spam" module is an extra-cost item.

Sybari's Antigen is e-mail only.

That would depend on what you install of Trend's suite. If you stick
with only the e-mail scanning then you can keep the Symantec AV stuff
installed.

Well, that's true of his file-level AV. I don;t know if he's got
Symantec's e-mail stuff installed (he didn't say).
I'm a believer in not have just one vendor's stuff scanning for virus.
We use Antigen for mail and Symantec for servers and desktops.
Do you know if Trend uses the same AV engines in all their products?
If so, diversifying may be a good idea. What one engine/signature
combination misses the other might catch.
