i cannot get backend server to pass messages between them.

server1 - outbound ok
server1 to server2 - ok
server2 outbound - ok
server2 to server1 - will not pass email.

I am sure that I am missing something simple. Any asstance would be great.

Sounds like server 2 has a smarthost on it.

Any restrictions going from 2 to 1?
Can you actually telnet to the box from the other one and pass a
message to it? Can you do that by IP, netbios name and internal FQDN?
